Welcome!
TK has finally succeeded in convincing me to document our trip and broadcast it to the world wide web! Travel blogging is basically a profession, and I am not claiming to be a travel blogger nor a photographer. I usually write a journal when we travel (literally pen to paper), and the journal is long and boring and full of my random observations and thoughts, inappropriately placed parenthesis, bad grammar, and run on sentences. I expect this will be just like my travel journal, with an addition of few pictures. You have been warned.
What Are We Doing?
We have saved some money and packed two 40L backpacks and have set out to see some of the world. We don’t have a set itinerary but, in general we will spend a few months in Central and Eastern Europe and some time in Bosnia (where our extended family lives). This part of our journey will be a road trip via car. We then plan to go to China and Southeast Asia, and, if budget and/or time allow possibly Australia and New Zealand. We plan to travel via bus, rail, plane, and any other mode of transportation that will get us from point A to Z. We do have a set time and a set budget for this trip, and hopefully they will run out at the same time!
Why Tomato Tourists?
Tomato Tourists is a direct translation from Serbian term “Paradajz Turisti”. This exclusively Serbian term was coined by a fellow Serb in the 80s when, in order to save money on their yearly beach vacations, Serbs would bring food from home instead of eating out at restaurants. For many this was just more economical, for others they wanted to save as much money as possible to buy other souvenirs and goodies in countries like Greece (very popular vacation spot with Serbs in 80s)! Why tomatoes? Well, they are cheap and yummy and familiar to every Serb. You just need some tomatoes and salt and bread and you got a meal! TK and I definitely identify as Paradajz Tourists since we are definitely doing this on budget and love tomatoes for every meal!
